We rented a private car to the carratera austral, but here are important tips:

1.The road is suitable for a private car, but in some of the places the road is not so good and has holes, so you must drive carefully.

2.Because of loose stones on the road you might get a mark on the metal of the car or the window. This is the only case where there is an advantage for a pick up - they will charge you less or wouldnt mind.

3.After driving in places with dust you MUST wash the brakes and better clean the air filter.

4.DANGEROUS PLACES - the road to Chile Chico along the southern shores of Lago General Carrera is VERY dangerous.
