”מה לעשות בביג קורן“
First of all, I will start by saying that i didn´t find stuff which were reason good enough to travel to Big corn. Especially not by yourself. If you are with your girlfriend/boyfriend i would advise using the corn islands option as a cheap way to be in the caribean only if you want to go to little corn - see seperate tip.
Also, there are places which are dangerous in Big corn - see seperate tip for that too.
One more thing - I was there in october, very low season, some of the things here might not be true for high season between march and april.
Places to sleep in:
for muchileros who just want a hammock for 3 US Dollars a night you have the Cafe del mar. The cheap places after that are, for 100 cordobas a night, a hostel next to to ``ruppie grill bar`` (central intersection so might be safer at night but still problematic) and the casa blanca which i stayed in - kinda dirty, cocroaches in one of the nights, and in the middle of coco beach which has no lights at night and so might be dangerous at that time. Don´t count on electricity at night anywhere without a self generator.
For 2 people who dont want a shared bed the best place I saw was the bayside hotel in the north beach which gave roomy rooms with private bathroom for 15 US Dollars.
If you are a couple I strongly recommend going to the Nautilus dive center - a very nice woman runs this place - 15 US Dollars and you get tv and kitchen.
Also you might want to check the very pricey hotel paraiso (also on coco beach - but you have no reason to leave the hotel at night) for 40 US Dollars a night or 34 if you stay there a week.
Other places i heard are nice:
Hotel picnic center on the most south end of the west beach, and the hotels that were under rennovation when i was there (october 2004) - the panorama, and morgan´s mini hotel, on the north beach near the nautilus. Among them, i think panorama is supposed to be the cheapest.
Eating:
The resaurants in the hotels Nautilus and Paraiso are much MUCH better then anything else. In nautilus there is excellent breakfast and seafood variety. And I loved the pasta in paraiso. You will find there good things in the 50-60 cordobas a dish price range. Also, the picnic center hotel has a supposedly good restaurant - haven´t been there.
Beaches:
First of all - ask the woman in Nautilus - she rents out scuba equipment and she knows around. ask about safe beaches and good beaches for snorkling and swimming.
The north beach has little sand but a coral reef.
The west beach (long bay) has manby sand but is very empty and dangerous!
The east beach may be unsafe at night when the electricity goes out especially, and has some places good for swimming. I think the best choice is next to the hotel picnic center.
Transport:
buses - 5 cordobas per person.
Taxis - 10 cordobas per person.
All in all - not much to look at. but if you do go to little corn and need to spend a night in big corn i hope this helps you.
