להלן הטיפ:
Baia Mare can be a great place to start exploring the Maramures and in 1 week you can easily do the Maramures and the Southern Bukovina on the cheap. From Baia Mare there are a few buses a day to Sighetu Marmatiei from where you can visit the Merry Cemetery in Sapanta (a unique place which illustrates the local belief that death is a mere transition into another life and it can be therefore welcomed by a smile and not neccessarily by a grief), as well as the traditional areas of villages where one can explore the rural households, as well as the wooden churches. Accommodation in Maramures is at its best in guesthouses rather than in towns and cities, so you can just look around in the villages you cross for ``cazare`` or ``pensiune`` boards, paying about EUR 10-15 per day. Do ask the host for a home made meal, they are great cooks there and the cuisine is one of thge main features of traditional life up there. Otherwise, if you wish to be more organized, I would recommend this place in Sighet: www.casaiurca.com/. For a budget option here you can check out Siesta Motel: Str. Avram Iancu 42, tel.:+4-0262-31.14.68; Fax:+4-0262-31.12.53.
Then you can move on to Vatra Dornei Spa across the scenic Prislop Pass by bus; there is a single bus a day going from Sighet to Vatra Dornei, ask your host for the schedule, usually it leavest Sighet in the early morning (there are a few trains a day from Vatra Dornei to Gura Humorului and farther to Suceava). Alternatively, you can go by train with a detour and a change, heading to Gura Humorului, to the painted monasteries area:
Sighetu Marmatiei - Salva / Salva - Gura Humorului - Train no.
07.20-11.30 P/ 14.51-18.53 A1835
16.17-19.40 A/ 23.21-03.30 A1767
16.59-20.40 A/ 23.21-03.30 A1767
There usually are drivers waiting in front of the railway station at Gura Humorului and you can go on a short tour to see Voronet and Humor monasteries or on a longer one also involving Sucevita and Moldovita monasteries. Alternatively, you can walk to Humor and Voronet monasteries: exit the station in GH, walk to the main road, turn left and follow the signposts to Voronet (4 km. on way) or to the right and follow the signposts to Humor Monastery (6 km. one way). When in Gura Humorului I would definitely recommend a traditional meal in Moldova Restaurant (otherwise an ugly concrete building, but with a great chef, for sure); have a Romanian translate some of the funny stories and sayings in the menu. A few ideas: in Maramures - as you are on a very tight schedule - I would go on a tour set up by www.casaiurca.ro. In Southern Bukovina I would arrange in advance a tour with Ciprian in Suceava: [email protected], tel.: +4-0744292588. These would make your access to remote places much easier.
From Gura Humorului you can return to Baia Mare with a change in Cluj, a few good connections a day...
Best regards,
Alex
